Under the supervision of a qualified faculty member, a teaching assistant may be responsible for assisting with such tasks as taking attendance, grading with a teacher-approved answer key, helping students with their textbook-related accounts, and other tasks necessary for the smooth operation of an assigned course.
Teaching assistants might also be assigned to be lab monitors, also under the supervision of a qualified faculty member, which involves assisting students with homework or lab work assignments, and/or actively engaging students in language-learning activities, such as games, conversation groups, or bringing in guests to participate in different ways.
*A qualified faculty member will be someone who is fully qualified to be a teacher at our institutions.
Work with the assigned instructor/faculty to instruct students and grade assignments, as needed, to accurately accomplish the intended outcomes of the courses, help with reporting requirements, and other class-related student needs.
Participate in lectures and labs, as needed, to help instruct the student body. Following the outlines and policies of the institution, as well as the instructions and guidance of the qualified instructor for the course.
Teacher Assistants are not technically faculty, so they do not have to complete professional development like other faculty. However, they are encouraged to take time to learn and improve their hard skills and attend bi-sessional faculty meetings.
English proficiency: The teacher assistant must have a level of English language proficiency compatible with the level that they are assigned to help with. They must have passed the level that they are helping with, with a minimum of an 80% average, or be enrolled in at least 2 levels above any assigned course. Example: a teacher assistant assigned to level 3 must have passed level 3 with an 80% average, or be currently enrolled in level 5-8. Obviously, the better their English proficiency, the better they will be able to communicate with and help the students in their assigned class.
Experience: The teacher assistant position does not require any previous experience.
Trainability: Applicants must demonstrate a willingness and ability to be trained in their assigned teachers’ instructional practices.
Communication Skills : Applicants should be able to demonstrate ability to communicate well with students, faculty, and office staff. Should demonstrate the ability to remain patient and level headed in various situations.
