Position Summary

McCarthy is seeking an External Communications Manager to lead media relations, craft compelling content, and manage public relations agency relationships for our Southern Region.  The ideal candidate would be  creative and collaborative, with a knack for strategic, brand-building storytelling. We’re looking for a critical thinker who is comfortable working with partners at all levels and guiding various internal audiences toward a common goal. With a focus on public relations, media coordination, and crisis communications, this role will cover our Southern region states and based in our Dallas, TX office.  Please include samples of your work along with your resume.

Technical Skills 

  • Established media contacts both within AEC industry and broader business media – relationships built on trust, not just a contact list.  

  • Exceptional creative and technical journalism/public relations skills, with the ability to craft press releases that get picked up, position executives as industry voices, and develop social media that drives engagement. 

  • Strategic messaging that supports our brand and strengthens it, partnering closely with our internal communications team to find and tell the most compelling stories.  

  • Ability to evaluate and manage local and industry-specific media listings and distributions.  

  • Experience creating polished deliverables including media releases, event coordination, social media, press kits, website updates, and all external communications. 

  • External consultant and PR agency management, coordination, and planning to ensure cohesive messaging and tracking approach across geographies.  

  • Experience seeking appropriate media opportunities to support strategic initiatives. 

  • Crisis management experience and statement generation and distribution. 

Qualifications 

  • Bachelors degree in Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Business, or related field.  

  • 5+ years of previous experience in B2B communications - coordinating media relations, media monitoring, distribution, writing, and external communications management. 

  • Experience in creative and technical writing including personnel and project press releases, industry publications and articles, internal communications training, overall messaging and branding. 

  • Track record conducting research, generating compelling narratives and managing stakeholder expectations.  

  • Desktop proficiency in all Microsoft and preferably Adobe Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere and Illustrator. 

  • Experience with CRM database management systems. Microsoft Dynamics CRM a plus.   

  • Experience in social media management and media monitoring – Hootsuite, Amplify and Meltwater are a plus.  

  • Exceptional organizational, writing, communication, time management, and project management skills.
